Members of Earby Town Council were pleased to reopen the public toilets at the bus terminus on Victoria Road this week following the forced closure last year due to repeated incidents of vandalism.
At a cost to the public purse of over £9,000 the conveniences have been fitted with high security steel doors and a contactless payment entry system, facilitating access with debit or credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Despite the investment and running costs, members of council were committed to reopening the toilets against a trend of such services closing nationally, and to keep the cost of access to residents, commuters and visitors down to just 40 pence a visit.
The Chair of the Town Council, Councillor Tom Hardman said ” We are delighted to see this vital public service reopened. The introduction of contactless payment builds on the significant increase in use of the payment method following Covid and allows for an extra layer of security and increased availability when combined with the new doors. We encourage the public to actively report any misuse or damage to the premises to avoid their closure again. ”
The conveniences are separate sex toilets, accessible between 5.30am and 10.30pm and both accommodate disabled person access and baby changing facilities.
